Working at Alpine
We are owner-managed and have run manufacturing operations at the same site since 1997. People here tend to stay a long time.
Where the work is
Our works at Kachigam, Nani Daman covers the press shop, tool room, slitting, inspection and despatch. Our Mumbai registered office covers commercial, import documentation and customer accounts.
There is one factory and there has only ever been one. That is worth knowing before you apply: it means the tool room is on the same floor as the presses, that a setter and an inspector work within sight of each other, and that nobody here is managing a site they never visit. Get to know us describes what each of the two places does.
What the work is
At Daman the material arrives as mother coil, is slit to the width a tool needs, stamped on progressive tooling, inspected three times — at first-off, in-process and on the finished lot — and packed with its lot identity and its paperwork. How a coil becomes a packed lot sets out the six operations in order, and is the most accurate picture of the day-to-day work on this site.
Tooling is built in house rather than bought in, from tungsten carbide or high-speed steel, and maintained on the same floor that runs it. A worn tool is sharpened on our own grinders.
In Mumbai the work is enquiries, costing, letters of credit and customs documentation for imported coil, and customer accounts. The import desk has run in house since 1998, so the documentation is done here rather than handed to an agent.
What we look for
Press setters and tool-room hands who can read a drawing and set a progressive tool. Inspectors who are comfortable with a control plan and a calibration record. Commercial staff who can handle import documentation and letters of credit.
Experience in electrical steel is useful but not required. Willingness to work to a written standard is.
The standard is not a figure of speech: the site is certified to ISO 9001, the quality assurance plan and control plan are held per part rather than per factory, measuring equipment is kept under calibration control, and parts are made to the current drawing revision with that revision recorded. What we check, and when is the same document a customer reads, and it describes what the job actually asks of an inspector.
